New Zealand Flag & Southern
Sky
In the Southern Hemisphere we see a
slightly differ view of the universe beyond the Earth.
In the night sky, stars can be seen
which are always below the horizon on northern lands - the best known being
the constellation of the Crux, The Southern Cross which is seen on our national
New Zealand Flag. The Southern Cross is never visible to most of the Northern
Hemisphere (above about 20N in June) and has therefore become a celestial
symbol of the antipodes with it's long axis pointing to the south pole.
For the star gazer or amateur astromomer from the Northern Hemisphere, a
trip to New Zealand offers opportunities to explore stars not seen from home
with or without a telescope.
