The Bayview Grand Chateau is New Zealand's only hotel located in the Tongariro National Park. The Grand Chateau was completed in 1929, when elegance was much in style. And although it has been extensively refurbished over the years, it still retains many of its most endearing original features.
The Tongariro National Park, one of New Zealand's outstanding conservation areas, came into being as a result of the gift to the Nation from the Tuwharetoa people of the land surrounding and including the three great volcanic mountains - Ruapehu, Ngaruhoe and Tongariro. The original area of 2600ha was subsequently extended by acquisition of surrounding lands to the present size of 75, 000ha to become New Zealand's first National Park, the fourth in the world - recently granted recognition as a World Heritage Area.
