New Zealand Accommodation + North
Auckland
Starting at the Auckland
Harbor Bridge, the North Auckland area stretches as far north as the Northland
settlement of Waipu.
Waipu is famous for its Scottish descendants from Nova Scotia (new Scotland)
and Scotland and also for the New Year Highland Games. Plus of course its
famous Surf Beach.
While many tourist rush North to the Bay of Island - they miss out on the
delights of Auckland's North Shore and Northern suburbs such as Devonport
and Takapuna, the Hibiscus Coast's Orewa, and Whangaporoa.
Just across the Auckland Harbor bridge is the Victorian style suburbs of
Birkenhead, Northcote and Devonport with their historical villas denoting
a bygone era. While Birkenhead is a busy shopping area, the Northcote point
with its street side cafes and delightful pub is the ideal place to spend
a relaxing Saturday or Sunday. While only a short drive across the Auckland
Harbor bridge, the historical villa home stays make a relaxing and pleasant
change from the pressured hotel environment. Devonport is now renowned for
its relaxed sidewalk café's and restaurants, which like Birkenhead
is simply a ferry ride across Auckland's busy Waitemata Harbor. Above the
Devonport 'village' is two volcanic cones - North Head and Mount Victoria
- which give awesome views, of the whole inner harbor and of Auckland City
and contain fortifications dating back to the early 1880 'Russian Invasion
Scare'. Of particular interest is the 'disappearing guns' on the summits,
which have never fired a shot in anger.
10km north of Devonport is the seaside suburb and commercial
centre of the North Shore, Takapuna, over-looking the channel and Rangitoto
Island. With its long beach and long walks past amazing examples of lava
flows to Milford, this area also has many excellent restaurants most with
a ethic flavor -from Russian, Thai, Italian, India, Mexican, Turkish to a
simple Wendy's, McDonalds, or KFC.
The British Telecom Satellite center in Albany - New Zealand's version of
the Silicon valley with a number of state of the art computer manufacturing
and development companies - supports the Earth Satellite Station at Walkworth
providing telephone, TV and Internet connections to the world. Although New
Zealand has a isolated position to the rest of the world, technology has
proved that we are capable of producing innovative solutions to any number
of problems.
Further North there is the wonderful Orewa beach noted for its 5km stretch
of white sand, lack of crowds and its seaside shopping area behind. Just
over the hill is Waiwera, noted for its hot pools and water complex of water
slides, spa pools, various hotpools of differing tempatures and BBQ areas
which the whole family can enjoy. On the western coast, the town of Helensville
also has geothermal springs which the local council has turned into a resort
and swimming pool area
As you travel North you pass through the towns of Puhio, a picturesque village
that claims to be NZ's first Bohemian Village. Its a must to have a beer
in the old pub !! Then Warkworth which is the gateway to the various beachside
holiday resorts and to Kawau Island - home of one of New Zealand early English
Governors, Sir George Grey. Close by and just off the road is the Perry Kauri
Park with several huge Kauri Trees including the 800+ years old McKinney
Kauri
There are many small rural areas which lead directly on to the picturesque
beaches with excellent fishing opportunities making this area ideal for the
traveller not in a hurry to stop and relax. Some of the best areas to visit
along this coast line are Omaha, Matherson's Bay, Leigh, and Mangawhai
Heads.
