 Auckland
is surrounded by two oceans (Tasman and the Pacific), with two harbours (Manukau
and Waitemata) and covered by over 50 extinct volcanoes which provide many
of the cities parks and scenic outlooks. Auckland Harbour with its outlying
Islands offers a sheltered sailing and boating environment - thus the name
“City of Sails”
Settled by the Maori in appox 1350 AD, the Auckland area proved a very fertile
growing area and as a result many of the volcanic cones were fortified attack
against rival tribes . Tribal warfare ravaged the area and by 1840 when the
Europeans arrived the area was almost deserted.
After the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, Captain William Hobson,
New Zealand First Governor (appointed by the British Government) moved the
capital from Russell in the Bay of Islands to Auckland because of the more
fertile land and excellent harbour. 25 years later the capital was moved
to Wellington, centre of New Zealand and closer to the Otago Goldfields.
 Auckland
is New Zealand's commercial and industrial capital with a population of over
1 million people separated into 4 cities, North Shore to the North, Manukau
City to the south, Waitakere to the West, and Auckland in the middle and
covering the centre of the city. There are many activities within the Auckland
with the most notable being the eye catching Skytower - New Zealand’s
tallest structure at 328 metres above sea level (complete with revolving
restaurant). Other fascinating places to visit are the Auckland War Memorial
Museum, Kelly Tarlton’s underwater world and Antarctic Encounter, and
Museum of Transport and Technology with its excellent displays of rare and
historical aircraft. Rainbows End Adventure park is a must to visit for the
Children and young at heart.
With Auckland's large and diverse population, restaurants abound with many
having a national theme - Mongolian, Turkish, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Bavarian,
Italian and the lively Irish Guinness taverns. From Auckland’s vineyards,
a wide range of excellent local wines are available and tours to the different
vineyards are very popular.
The theatre and performing arts are well represented and first run films
are shown at the many excellent modern cinemas. During the summer, many free
concerts are played at the Auckland Domain attracting audiences of up to
200,000. In many of the parks, smaller concerts are put on by the local council
at weekends.
