Plenty
 The Bay of Plenty extends from Kati Kati and the popular surfing
and holiday beach Waihi in the north to the seaside town of Whakatane in
the South. Situated south of the Coromandel area, and one hours drive from
Hamilton and 2˝ hours drive from Auckland this area is a little bit
off the beaten track but well worthwhile visiting. As the area has easy access
to the large Auckland and Hamilton population base, hotels, motels and motor
lodges offer excellent accommodation.
With the Kaimai ranges forming a barrier to the west, this area has a very
high proportion of sunny days and is consistently mild all year round making
it ideal for horticulture. The area is renowned for its kiwi fruit and orchards,
as well as for its timber and wood chip exports. Of interesting note is the
dramatic increase in the number of companies bottling mineral water from
the numerous natural springs. There are several hot mineral spa pool complexes
around taking advantage of the local geothermal energy and the close proximity
to Rotorua about 45 minutes drive away.
The largest city is Tauranga and its port is the largest export port in New
Zealand with the very popular surf beach of Mount Manganui on the opposite
side of the harbour. The ancient volcanic plug (232 metres high) making a
spectacular landmark. Both Air New Zealand and Ansett airlines fly into Tauranga
airport from Wellington and Auckland International airports. Charter and
fishing trips operate from the port all year around, so whether you wish
to swim with the dolphins or go big game fishing off White Island (New Zealand's
most active live volcano), ride a jet ski or go for a leisurely sail on a
yacht - the choices are all here. For the thrill seekers, tandem skydiving,
riding the bungy rocket in Tauranga, or white water rafting on the Wairoa
is all available.
Tauranga and Mount Mangauni have a multitude of café’s and eating
places with some of the most popular being the “Collar and Thai”
, Taste of Italy, Baywatch Brasserie and Bar, Beach Street. Don’t forget
to visit the award winning vineyards of Mill. As you travel south visit Kiwi
Fruit Town theme park, where you can visit the orchards, watch the packing
and sample the fruit or even have a taste of Kiwi fruit wine.
At the south end of the Bay of Plenty is the town of Whakatane, which acts
as the northern gateway to the scenic east cape. Again with wonderful surf
beaches and dolphin swimming, this town is renown for its big game fishing
