New Zealand Accommodation + Hawkes
Bay + Napier
Hawkes Bay is a part of New Zealand
sadly missed by many visitors to our country with its fine sunny weather,
fine Art Deco style, award winning wineries and the Te Urewera National Park.
The most northerly town is Wairoa which is the gateway to Te Urewera National
Park renowned for its large area of lush forests, lakes and rivers, trout
fishing, deer and other wildlife. There are lots of treks within the National
Park - particularly the famous Waikaremoana track which takes 3-4 days.
The Napier area was heavily populated by the Maori and fortified with occupied
forts or Pa’s until the whalers arrived and set up trading posts. Initially
discovered by Captain James Cook in October 1769, and subsequently rediscovered
by the French explorer Jules D’Urville, the safe port of Ahuriri gave
access into the productive farming areas.
The City of Napier, established in 1854 and named after the British General
and Administrator Charles Napier, is famed for its Art Deco style having
been extensively rebuilt after the disastrous earthquake and following fire
in 1931. The earthquake which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, devastated
both Napier and Hastings as well as the surrounding area with the loss of
over 250 lives. Bluff Hill rises above the city to the north and the fine
wooden villas, which survived the quake and fires, give this area a genteel
air of a bygone era. The area abounds with Bed and Breakfasts the most notable
the Masters Lodge which is the most upmarket place in Napier. It was the
former home of the founder of the National Tobacco Company now called Rothmans.
Down on the flat, where most of the reconstruction took place, the architecture
of the day was Art Deco with its soft pastel colours and zig zag and
geometric motifs.
Other attractions in Napier are the Marine Parade with its Norfolk pines,
Marineland with performing seals and dolphins, The Kiwi House with live kiwis
in a natural habitat, swimming pools and mini-golf park.
Hastings is further inland (only 20km away from Napier) and
also noted for its Art Deco and Spanish Mission style architecture. It is
the agricultural centre for the region and noted for its apple orchards
particularly the Pacific Rose variety. The area is also renowned for its
large number of excellent wineries mainly producing excellent Chardonnay
wines as well as fine Cabernet Sauignons. Some of the most notable wineries
are Brookfields, Esk Valley Estate, Vidays of Hawks Bay and Ngatarawa. Many
of the smaller towns such as Havelock North, and Taradale also have wineries,
such as Te Mata Estate, Waimarama Estate and Lombardi wine. The most famous
New Zealand winery is The Mission at Taradale which hosts an international
concert each year with such renowned singers as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. A special
label is produced for each artist. In addition in February each year, the
Hawkes Bay wine and food festival focuses of the local restaurant’s
and wineries.
Travel to the Hawkes Bay is by Air New Zealand and by Orgin Pacific each day. The
Bay Explorer train also runs each day from Wellington.
