Dunedin Hotel Accommodation + Historic
Dunedin
With it's rich coastal
fishing and hunting grounds inland this area has been occupied by Maori since
around 1100AD. Dunedin was originally founded by Scottish settlers in the
1840's. The sheltered deep water of Otago Harbour was a valuable natural
anchorage.
In the 1860s gold was discovered in central Otago and Dunedin grew wealthy
as the main city and port of the region. At the turn of the century it was
the wealthiest city in New Zealand. There are many outstanding and well preserved
buildings from these times: The University (1869), Municipal Chambers (1880),
Railway Station (1906) and countless private villas.
Otago Museum has excellent natural history presentations and fine collections
of Maori artefacts while Otago Settlers Museum is dedicated to the early
pioneers of this region.
The Octagon is the centre of the City and has an imposing statue of Scotland's
National Bard - Robert Burns. St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is also situated
here.
