Marlborough
The Marlborough area
is full of contrasts - from the bays and beaches on the Sounds in the North
to the vineyards and orchards on Wairau plains and to the spectacular scenery
of the Kaikouria Ranges.
Picton - the most northern town of the area - is the South Island ferry terminus
to all the ferry companies such as Quickcat, Transrail (roll on\off) and
TopCat ferries and is an ideal place to start investigating the sounds and
its walking tracks. The Queen Charlotte Track which is a walk of 3-4 days
attracts the most visitors while boating is very popular with over 379Km
of shoreline to be explored within the 42Km Pelorus Sound.
Blenheim is the largest town in the region with direct air links to Wellington
and is the center for New Zealand’s world renowned growing area for
the famous Sauvignon Blanc wines. With over 30 different wineries producing
award wining wines with famous names such as Hunters, Montana, Selaks, Merlen
this is a great place to stop a while and take in the wine tours. Of course
the Cherry orchards in season are not to be missed. In late February, there
is the very popular Marlborough food and wine festival on the Montana Brancott
Estate where you can sample the various wine makers products and the specialties
of the local restaurants.
As most traveler’s head east over the Richmond ranges to Nelson, some
of best stopping places are Pinedale or Canvas Town where you can hire gold
pans and other equipment to try your luck in this old gold mining town which
dates back to 1864 and the Pelorus bridge scenic reserve which as interesting
walks of between 30 minutes and 3 hours.
If you head south towards Christchurch - you pass through spectacular coastal
scenery complete with road tunnels until you reach the small town Kaikoura
which is famous for its crayfish or rock lobster, whale watching and dolphin
swimming. While there are of course, no guarantees as to seeing whales or
dolphins on any one day, the most likely period that sperm whales will be
seen is October to August and Orcas (as seen in the movie “Free Willy”
) between December and March. Allow for a few days in case the weather prevents
a successful encounter with the world’s largest mammals.
