Queenstown
 Queenstown is set amongst
some of the most scenic spots in New Zealand with breathtaking views of the
Remarkable and Eyre mountains and snuggled against lake Wakatipu. The area
was settled by sheep farmers in the Mid 1850's but in 1862 two shearers Thomas
Arthur and Harry Redfern discovered gold on the banks of the Shotover river.
creating a rush of prospectors to the area from the earlier discovered and
famous Gabriel's Gully. Within 12 months Queenstown was a vibrant mining
town of several thousand people with four paddle steamers and many other
boats plying Lake Wakatipu.
Queenstown is now the adventure resort
capital of New Zealand with jet boating, white water rafting, bungy jumping,
tandem parachuting among the many activities available or you can simply
enjoying the local skifields.
For those who just want to enjoy a more laid back pace, a trip on the historic
steamship TSS Earnslaw or a ride in the Skyline Gondola is essential as well
as a trip to the old gold mining town of Arrowtown. One of the most spectacular
trips is out to Skippers Canyon with historical and scenic sites along the
Shotover River.
Millbrook Resort golf course, played upon by the President of the United
States during the 1999 APEC conference is a must to play for those golfing
enthusiasts. Queenstown has many excellent restaurants with a great variety
from Japanese to Curries and especially the Lone Star Cafe where the steaks
are as big as Texas and a great range of New Zealand wines is available.
But if you have an eye for the night life, the Mall is the place to start
with Shanahan's Guinness bar, Eichart's hotel, and the Moa bar to mention
just a few of the hot, popular places. Queentown should'nt be visited without
trying a quiet locally brewed beer at McNeills Brewery and Bar.
