New Zealand Hotel and Accommodation in Rotorua
 Rotorua
and its surrounding lakes is the most popular tourist area of the North Island
and abounds with quality hotels, motor lodges, and motels.
Access is very easy with bus, road and frequent flights with Air New Zealand,
Qantas New Zealand and a variety of other airlines. As Rotorua is only 2-3
hours drive from Auckland, an hour from Hamilton and 45 minutes from Taupo
and Tauranga, it′s within easy reach of the whole of the North Island.
With boiling mud pools, gushing geysers
and bubbling hot springs, it has been nicknamed "Sulphur City" because
of the strong smell of sulphurous gases that you come across occasionally.
With geothermal areas close to the city at Whakarewarewa with its large Maori
cultural centre, the area caters for the tourist with a wide range of cultural
shows and feasts (hangi).
The most popular thermal pool "The
Polynesian Spa" is in the Government Gardens which is laid out in traditional
English fashion with roses bushes, wide green lawns, croquet and petanque
rings and the occasional steaming pool. This Spa was opened in 1886 and has
several modern pools. With the ample geothermal energy most hotels and motels
have their own indoor private spa pools attached.
The area has a wide range of attractions
for everybody ranging from White Water Rafting on the Rangitaiki River, Rainbow
Trout fishing on the lakes, Tandem Skydiving from Rotorua Airport and Jet
boating on the Waikato River. Or even try out your driving skills in a 4WD
off roader in the country.
Take a trip on the gondola up to Mt
Ngongotaha for a look at the panoramic views and a ride down the hill on
a Luge (toboggan) is an experience not to be
missed. Then there is the Zorb - an inflatable double plastic sphere where
you roll down hill for 150 meters. Also on the mountain is a flight simulator,
shooting range, and mini-golf course.
For the less active there is a whole
range of activities ranging from the Agrodome with demonstrations of sheep
shearing and sheepdog displays. A dairy display, farmyard nursery and dairy
farm milking is included. A good level walk is the Rainbow springs Trout
and Wildlife Sanctuary with displays of Trout (brown and rainbow), a aviary
and a nocturnal Kiwi House. Also worth a visit is the Orchard Gardens which
bloom all year around, plus there is Micro-world where you can watch the
bugs in close detail. One of the wonders in this complex is the water organ
with over 900 jets which puts on a 15 minute ballet-like display every hour
on the hour. (A good place to rest the feet after all the shopping and walking.)
Just out of Rotorua is the Buried
Village with its local history and tragic tales of the Tarawera Eruption
of 1886 which destroyed the world renowned silicon Pink and White Terraces.
Also well worth the effort is the 4WD trip up Mt Tarawera to view the chasm
and look out on the area it devastated. Of the fun things to do there is
the largest hedge maze in New Zealand - the Fairbank Maze by the airport
and at Te Ngae Park is a 3-D wooded maze.
Rotorua is a fun place to visit with
the whole family and there is heaps to do and enjoy - In this page we have
only touched on the wide variety of things to do and even then we almost forgot about
the Lakeland Queen paddle steamer on Lake Rotorua.
