New Zealand Accommodation +
Southland
The forgotten part of
New Zealand and away from tourist traps but well worthwhile spending the
time to explore.
Supporting a large agricultural district, Invercargill is the most southerly
city of New Zealand and the gateway to Stewart Island. It is also the gateway
via the South to Milford Sound and Queenstown. Settled by the Scots from
Glasgow in large numbers in the 1890, (which is why the locals roll their
‘R’s ), the city has a well organized layout with a large number
of old fashioned department stores with the old fashioned personal service.
One of the nicest restaurants is the Lone Star where the steaks are as big
as Texas and the other place to dine is the HMS Kings Restaurant which is
a replica of an old sailing ship with its seafood menu. You should also try
when in season is New Zealand’s famous delicacy - Bluff oysters which
are flown the same day as harvest all over New Zealand.
The Bluff harbor and Point is a must to visit just to say that you have traveled
from Northcape to the Bluff and photographed the signpost at Sterling Point.
Although technically its not the most southerly part of New Zealand, from
the top of the observation point on Bluff hill (a very ancient volcano) you
can see Stewart Island and the surrounding harbor.
With a large farming area in the Southland region, farmstays with trout and
fly fishing options are popular with good size fish being caught but a word
to the wise if you are a beer drinker. “They only drink Speights down
there!”.
