New Zealand Accommodation + Taupo

Lake Taupo, New ZealandAt the very heart of the North Island is Lake Taupo covering over 600 square km in area and renowned for its trout fishing, gentle volcanic activity, golf links and access to the North Island Ski fields on Mount Ruapehu. At the crossroads to Wellington, Auckland, Rotorua, Napier and the ski fields, this area is the ideal place to stop just off the tourist trail but with all the amenities that a traveller expects. Auckland is only 280km to the north, Wellington 389km to the South, 82km to Rotorua, and 143km to Napier.

Lake Taupo is a former volcano which exploded violently around 186AD and the sound was reported as far away as China and Rome. It forms the centre of the New Zealand volcanic zone which extends from the active Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro, through Lake Taupo, to the geothermal generating stations of Wairaki and Broadlands, across the geothermal wonderland of Orakei Korako, through to Rotorua and out to the active volcanic White Island off the Bay of Plenty.

The region begins at Taihape in the south and covers the ski fields both at Ohakune and Whakapapa on Mount Ruapehu. Taihape - gumboot throwing capital of New Zealand - has the excellent army and military QEII museum at Waiouru. The Golf course at the Chateau, National Park is a wonderful place to play a round while on the way up the mountain for skiing and accommdation is available through Innz travel at the Chateau itself. At the southern end of Lake Taupo is the trout fishing centre, Turangi with its famous fly fishing pools and excellent accommodation. It is also the ideal location to base your self for white water rafting, mountain bike riding, mountain walks and skiing at Turangi skifields.

Mount RuapehuAt Taupo itself, there is a wide variety of accommodation from backpacker hostels to elegant lodges and fine dining. There are a variety of activities here. There's the famous hole in one raft off the beach, minigolf (a tricky course if I can comment here), swimming in the thermal pools at the Taupo hot springs and the AC baths. Visit the Honey Hive New Zealand for all you want to know about honey and all its flavours including FREE Honey tasting (yes, Poo Bear is in residence) or the scrimp farm with scrimps being raised on the geothermal waters is worthwhile visiting. The Volcanic Activity Center monitors all the geothermal areas - Huka falls and the Wairakai Thermal valley with all its geothermal bores roaring away and used for generating electric power. Wairakai has it's international golf course. Trout fishing with your own guide and boat is not a problem in this rainbow trout wonderland!

Further north, is the Orakei Karako, one of the finest geothermal wonderlands of New Zealand. Not frequented by the masses of tourists as it's off the beaten track. You cross the mighty Waikato River in a jet boat to observe first hand the colorful silica terraces similar to those of the famous Pink and White Terraces destroyed in the Tarawera Eruptions. Geysers and boiling mud pools abound here amongst safe walks. In the Ruatapu cave, if you dip your fingers in the jade-green waters and make a wish, it is reputed that your wish will come true.
