New Zealand Hotel and Apartment Accommodation +
Wellington
Wellington is the Capital of New Zealand
and is situated at the southern end of the North Island. Access to the city
is via the Cook Strait ferries from the south, through the State Highway
One through Petone and the Kapiti Coast on the West Coast or through State
Highway Two through Masterton and the Wairarapa.
Based around
a large harbor with hills close to the waters edge, the main settlement has
been in the valleys to the north, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt, and to the west
in the valleys of Johnsonville, Tawa and Porirua. The main commercial centre
is based around Lampton Quay with Government Departments and Embassies close
to the port. Excellent motorways and electric commuter train system make
moving around the Wellington very easy.
Attractions of the center of Wellington city is the exhilarating cable car
ride from the small alley in the middle of commercial center in Lampton Quay
to the botanical gardens high above the city or taking in the views from
Mount Victoria. Also of significant interest is New Zealand’s National
museum Te Papa which has many modern interactive displays as well as traditional
displays. and close by is the National Library with its extensive collection
of early colonial pictures and records often used genealogy and other
research.
Renowned for its blustery weather as the area is exposed to the Southerly
Gales across Cook Strait. Flying into Rongatai, Wellington’s International
Airport, can be a experience with both Air New Zealand and Qantas pilots
displaying considerable skill on turbulent approaches! The small airline
Soundsair also flies from Wellington to Marlborough and to the Tasman-Nelson
provinces on a regular basis.
The Parliamentary
building, “The Beehive”, is at the end of Lampton Quay close to
the railway station, and its common to see the members of Parliament walking
around the streets with the public. There is no truth to the story that
Wellington’s windy conditions are caused by the hot air expelled by
the politicians when Parliament is in session.
With something like seven fault lines
running through the region, minor earthquakes are not unknown but strict
building codes prevent damage.
Both the InterIsland, and Lynx ferries operate from the ferry terminal,
with the slower InterIsland Car/Rail ferry taking about four hours to cross
Cook Strait. The Lynx which is a car / campavan carrying
catamarans cover the distance in less than two hours with shuttle buses
transporting people to the railway stations to connect with either the
Picton-Christchurch Pacific Explorer or the Northerner from Wellington to
Auckland.
